As the heart ages it has to work harder to pump blood around the body as efficiently as it once did, which place extra strain on the muscles in the heart and increases the risk of heart disease. Unfortunately, many heart conditions are invisible, particularly in their early stages. High blood pressure, high cholesterol, and atherosclerosis all have very few, if any, symptoms and are often referred to as silent killers. If you are over 50 years old, get your numbers checked even if you are healthy. This will give you a good indication of any lifestyle or dietary changes you may need to make. Luckily, it’s never too late to start looking after the heart, and in certain cases even repair damage. Of course, making changes to your behaviour, lifestyle and eating habits isn’t easy but it can make a huge difference. Try to set small goals such as increasing your activity levels or adding more fresh fruit and veg to your diet.
