How Much Vitamin D Do You Need?

The Department of Health recommends that a supplement containing 10mcg of vitamin D should be taken daily during the darker months. However, many leading experts believe this is too low and recommend 25-50mcg daily.

For reference, many vitamin D supplements list their contents in “international units” or IUs.

1mcg of vitamin D equates to 40 international units, meaning you should look for supplements offering at least 400 IUs for general use.






Vitamin D2 versus Vitamin D3

You’ll notice when looking at supplements that there are two different types of vitamin D supplements - D2 and D3. So what are the differences, and which is “best”?

Vitamin D2 is derived from plants, whereas vitamin D3 is the compound that our body creates in response to sunlight. Vitamin D3 supplements are derived from sheep’s wool and therefore are suitable for vegetarians, but not vegans.

Research has shown that vitamin D3 is more effective at increasing vitamin D stores in the body than D2. So if you are a vegan or choose to take D2, you will need to consume a greater dose relative to D3 to see the same benefit.
